* A GOOD 10.4MM (VETTERLI RIMFIRE) SWISS PEABODY SINGLE SHOT SERVICE RIFLE, CIRCA 1867, serial no. 323,
with 32 1/2in. barrel block and blade front-sight modified for target shooting, quadrant rear-sight, back-action lock plain and unmarked, the action stamped on the left-side of the action with the patent legends (faint) and the makers name "PROVIDENCE TOOL CO / PROV. R.I.", iron mounted two piece walnut stock. The action features a tilting block system similar to the Martini, but fired by an external hammer. Switzerland purchased approx. 5000 of these Peabody rifles for its forces of which this is one. It is believed that it was the Peabody that gave Von Martini the inspiration for the famous system that bears his name, with blued finish to barrel the action reblued, fading case colours to lock.
